Lessons I Learned Being a Business Owner for a Year

September 1st marks the one year anniversary of my soft launch of Creekside Health Coaching. This past year has been so exciting, but I would be lying if I didn’t also acknowledge the huge learning curve I have also experienced. Many of these lessons also coincide with how we work towards health goals, so I am going to share what I have learned this year as a new owner of a health coaching practice:
- Perseverance is key: Trust me, there were many days when I questioned my life choices and wondered if this was a good idea. I wondered if I was actually going to be able to help others. Thankfully, I stuck with it and eventually started gaining traction. This is such a universal theme in health coaching: when clients are trying their hardest to lose weight or make healthy choices and don’t immediately see the fruits of their labors, it’s easy to give up. But consistency will always win!
- It takes a village: I saw the most progress in my business when I began networking more with others. I have met so many amazing people over the last year and they have all impacted how I run my business-whether it’s connecting me with potential clients, referrals, or just cheering me on, my village has had a direct effect on my perseverance. Clients who have social support (family, friends, FB groups, etc) are more likely to be successful in meeting their health goals than those who don’t. Build your village and the results will come! However, be careful because…
- Not everyone deserves to be in your village: y’all, the internet is wild. Sometimes you will meet someone and think that together, you can create a positive collaboration, and it turns out, they don’t actually care about you or your business, they are in it for their own bottom line. We are all out here to create profitable businesses, so I get it, but this is MY business, so I can and will be choosy about who I partner with. When working on health goals, it’s important that the professionals you choose to partner with care about YOU and don’t treat you like a paycheck. I am so grateful for all of the health professionals who take care of me and you deserve to have a group who cares about YOU.
- Always do your own research: Again, the internet is wild. The health and wellness arena is saturated with hopeful professionals who believe ALL.SORTS.OF.THINGS. Please make sure you are using reputable sources for health information, especially for supplements. This is why I became a national-board certified health and wellness coach; I wanted my clients to know they were using a professional who only uses research-backed information to inform decision making.
- Always remember your why: I started my practice because I missed helping individuals create positive changes in their lives. I can honestly say that after each session with each client, I am energized and so happy! Helping others is my why and motivates me to keep going. When working towards health goals, it’s important to remember why you started, as this will keep you motivated to keep going, especially when things get hard.
